Abstract
Online customer reviews have become an important source of information for consumers evaluating products and services. Yet a numerical rating alone does not explain why one review persuades a potential buyer while another is ignored. This conceptual paper examines how review characteristics may influence consumer trust and purchase decisions in digital commerce. The study synthesises research concerning electronic word-of-mouth, online review credibility, review valence, review volume, reviewer characteristics and perceived risk. Based on this synthesis, the paper proposes a Consumer Review Influence Framework connecting five review-level signals-rating, textual detail, recency, reviewer credibility and consistency-to two psychological mechanisms: perceived trust and perceived risk. These mechanisms are proposed to influence purchase intention and, subsequently, the likelihood of post-purchase engagement. The framework also recognises that consumers do not interpret reviews in isolation; product involvement, prior familiarity, price sensitivity and platform context can alter their responses. Rather than presenting fabricated survey findings, the paper develops testable propositions and a practical research model for future empirical studies. The framework may help researchers and digital businesses understand why review ecosystems require more than aggregate star ratings and why trustworthy review information can be treated as a component of digital consumer decision-making.
